REVIEW: URGE OVERKILL @ BOWERY BALLROOM

Yeah, we were at the foot of the stage for the whole show, stuck around and got the keyboard player's set list at the end.

Right out of the gate I was a little disappointed with the sound, expecting a return to the band's post-Saturation arena form. Nash bailed out of some of the soaring high notes in Positive Bleeding. The drummer just got down to business, hammering away as the bass player did this mesmerizing anti-moonwalk in his white boots (matching his belt and bass), and then about five songs in I realized that the band had shaken the rust off and hit stride. They smashed through a good mix of songs from Saturation, Exit The Dragon and Stull, debuting one new song for good measure. The new tune is one of Eddie's, and sounds a lot like his attempt to get his own Sister Havana this time around. Don't get me wrong, I'll take it - it's a solid song, just no soaring chorus and since Nash gets all the radio play anyway don't expect to hear it on the air anytime soon.

We got a solid encore set and the crowd (looking to be about 500 strong) hollered for more. Denied.

Friday's songs:

Ticket to L.A.
Positive Bleeding
Woman
The Candidate
What's This Generation Coming To?
Last Night and Tomorrow
Bottle of Fur
Erica Kane
*New Tune*
Take Me
Monopoly
(Now That's) The Barclords
The Break

Crackbabies
Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon
Sister Havana
Stalker

By the way, "last week's" Crackbabies video had to have been filmed ten years ago. The band's looking a little older now and the new bass player plays a Fender Musicmaster, which sounds the way dried rubber cement looks.
