It Gets Better

After deciding on a color and finish for the steel radiator grille we discovered that our choice wouldn't work with the material so Steve dropped off another set of color samples - DuPont Alesta epoxy, for what it's worth - this time assured that we'd be able to get one of these paints on our metal. Closest we could find is a color called Sun Gold, a little sparkly for our taste but we really just need to get this over with. I asked if we could see a sample first - nope, there's a setup charge involved for the process. But Steve recommended I go by the Advanced Finishes Inc. plant and check out the "little sculpture" (Sun Gold on metal) in the showroom window. Little sculpture... I pictured a Statue of Liberty or maybe a palm tree, six inches high or so and surrounded by a bunch of other sprayed knick-knacks.

Awesome - it's a two foot by three foot wireframe portrait of the USS Reliant from Star Trek II with the company initials embedded in artistic locations. Combined with the Python stuff going on this is suddenly the geekiest week of the project.

The color will do.

...now I think the ship isn't the Reliant but one of the offshoot designs that was bundled in some pack of blueprints that was sold in the '70s... oh never mind.

The Next Level

I missed day one of PyCon here in DC yesterday, which is too bad because the one talk I really wanted to see was Andrew Koenig's presentation on using the Python programming language to help design his new kitchen.

No graph paper next time.

Good Again

We're not done yet - still need to get the grillework replaced, and where the hell are the carpet guys? - but I got my chair back. I can read again when I get up in the morning. For so long we've hurried to get ourselves together ahead of the contractors busting through the door at 8 AM. Now we can meet the day at our own pace.

Wow. A year ago that chair was surrounded by design magazines. Shudder.

Grillework

Steve found a new grille material for the radiator covers - this is real steel, a lot thicker than the stuff that's on there now. It won't bend under this kind of heat (fingers crossed).

Thing is we can't stain it like the last metal - this will have to be factory-treated with a finish from these samples.

Funny... this material looks a lot like the original stuff.

Don't go there.
